Sede di Gerusalemme
Primo semestre

Students will be initiated to the study of Theology in an African context; made aware of the influence of the social, cultural and religious African context on the theological task of the Christian believer. The course will introduce them to the works of African theologians and major themes of African Theology.

This course will concentrate on theological works emanating from or relating to Africa. It will include an initial discussion of the history and theological implications of concepts like inculturation, contextualization and ‘kenosis’. The meeting between Christianity and African thought, both traditional and modern, will be explored, as will the notion of ‘African Theology’. Particular insights into some of the great themes of Christian theology that have been developed within, or in view of, the Church in Africa will be examined. This will include a review of Christology, Eschatology and Ecclesiology in African perspective. There will also be an emphasis on the theological foundations the Justice and Peace apostolate, and its practice in Africa. Resource material will include the works of prominent African theologians as well as documents like those issued by the first and second African Synods, SECAM, local Episcopal Conferences or regional Assemblies thereof (AMECEA and others). A detailed bibliography will be supplied at the time of the course.
